Resizing Videos for Event and Exhibition Screens

Resizing Videos for Event: Perfect Fit for Any Screen

When you’re delivering video content at an event, the screen is your stage. Whether it’s a towering totem, a corner-wrap LED, a custom multi-panel wall, or a standard widescreen, the way you resize and reformat your assets will make or break the result. At Popi, we do this daily—and when simple scaling isn’t enough, we rebuild and re-animate in Adobe After Effects so your content fits perfectly without compromising your brand.

Why “good enough” resizing isn’t good enough

  • Stretched footage makes logos oval, faces odd, and products untrustworthy.
  • Cropped frames chop off key messages and destroy layout hierarchy.
  • Letterboxing/pillarboxing (black bars) can look like an error in a high-end environment.
  • Mismatched colours and soft text betray poor prep and weaken brand perception.

Your event content is often the first impression for guests, sponsors, or press. A sloppy fit devalues your brand—and audiences notice.

The core challenge: aspect ratios & pixel maps

Different displays = different aspect ratios and pixel dimensions. Here’s a quick reference:

Screen typeTypical aspect ratioCommon pixel sizes (examples)
Widescreen LED/Projector16:91920×1080, 3840×2160
Ultrawide LED32:9 / custom3840×1080, 5760×1080 (varies by wall)
Totem / Portrait9:161080×1920, 2160×3840
Square1:11080×1080, 2048×2048
Corner screen (two walls)Custome.g. 2880×1080 with a 90° seam

The golden rule: design to the actual pixel map, not just the aspect ratio. LED walls often have unusual dimensions—our team builds comps to match the exact pixel map from your AV supplier.

How we make your content fit (beautifully)

  1. Gather specs
We collect the venue’s screen specs: pixel map, physical dimensions, viewing distance, LED pitch, playback format, and any seam/curve/corner details.
  2. Content audit
We review your brand assets, master edit, logos, vector files, and fonts. We flag anything that won’t scale cleanly.
  3. Smart reframing
Using After Effects, we re-compose scenes: adjust safe areas, reposition subject matter, and retime transitions so nothing key gets cropped at unusual ratios.
  4. Rebuild & extend
Need more canvas? We’ll rebuild backgrounds, clean-plate edges, and extend motion graphics to fill ultra-wide or portrait canvases without warping. If needed, we recreate titles, lower-thirds, and UI elements from source files for pixel-perfect sharpness.
  5. Brand-true typography & colour
We regenerate titles at native resolution, apply brand-accurate colour, and maintain correct logo clear-space so everything looks designed for that screen (because it is).
  6. Corner & wrap logic
For corner screens, we design with the seam in mind—ensuring motion flows across the 90° join and avoiding critical content on the bend. We can deliver split renders or a single mapped file, depending on playback.
  7. Playback-ready exports
We supply files to the correct codec, frame rate, and bit-rate your AV team prefers (e.g. ProRes, HAP, high-bit-rate H.264/HEVC), tested on reference players.

Totems & portrait: not just a vertical crop

Portrait displays need purposeful design, not a centre-crop. We reposition layers, rebuild backgrounds top and bottom, and re-animate titles for vertical hierarchy. Key calls-to-action, faces, and logos sit where the eye expects—no cut-off captions, no tiny type.

Custom & corner screens: designing for the seam

Corner LEDs behave differently. Motion that crosses the seam needs to feel continuous, and elements near the join should respect viewing angles. We often produce two synced renders (Left/Right) or one mapped file, aligning animations so they meet perfectly at the corner.

Avoid these common pitfalls

  • “Just stretch it.” Never. It distorts shape and type.
  • Last-minute ratios. Lock specs early—resizing after sign-off can force compromises.
  • Tiny typography. LED pitch and viewing distance demand larger type than web/social.
  • Ignoring safe areas. Keep logos, subtitles, and faces away from edges, seams and bezel lines.
  • One-size-fits-all exports. Provide tailored masters per screen to ensure crisp delivery.

Our daily toolkit (and why it matters)

We live in After Effects. Daily. That means we can rebuild scenes, retime animations, re-layer artwork, and generate new frames so your content looks made-to-measure for every screen. If a simple scale won’t cut it, we design the right solution—no shortcuts, no stretched pixels.

FAQs

Can you resize one master for multiple screens?
We can adapt a master, but we’ll usually create bespoke versions per screen to maintain quality and composition.

What if my video is landscape but the screen is portrait?
We re-compose in After Effects—extend backgrounds, reposition subjects, rebuild titles—so it looks native to portrait, not a crop.

Do you handle unusual LED walls and corner wraps?
Yes. We regularly deliver to custom pixel maps, multi-output setups, and corner seams with precise motion alignment.
